Race to a Million: B2 Frequently Confused Words Edition

A Reading Part 1 Multiple Choice Cloze Game for Cambridge B2 First & First for Schools

The Confusing Words Mixed Edition of Race to a Million gives learners targeted, exam‑authentic practice with one of the most persistent challenges at B2: distinguishing between words that look similar, sound similar, or share overlapping meanings. This edition strengthens learners’ ability to interpret context precisely and select the correct lexical item, which is an essential skill for Reading Part 1 success.

What This Edition Targets

This mixed pack covers a wide range of high‑frequency confusing word pairs and groups commonly tested at B2, including:

  • lexical pairs with overlapping meanings (affect/effect, rise/raise, job/work)

  • noun/verb contrasts (practice/practise, advice/advise)

  • similar‑looking adjectives (economic/economical, historic/historical)

  • common exam traps (remember/remind, borrow/lend, fun/funny)

  • context‑dependent choices (travel/trip/journey, chance/possibility/opportunity)

  • near‑synonyms with different collocational behaviour (avoid/prevent, look/see/watch)

Each card presents a gapped sentence with four options, requiring learners to discriminate meaning, function, and collocation with accuracy.

Why Students Love This Edition

  • Clear, meaningful contrasts: Students quickly see how small lexical changes can alter the meaning of a sentence.

  • High‑frequency relevance: These words appear constantly in coursebooks, exams, and real communication.

  • Fast, competitive gameplay: The race to one million keeps motivation high and encourages rapid decision‑making.

Why Teachers Love This Edition

  • Exam‑authentic micro‑tasks: Every item mirrors the cognitive demands of Reading Part 1.

  • Zero‑prep classroom setup: Mini‑whiteboards, ladders, tokens, and the card set are all you need.

  • Broad syllabus alignment: Confusing words appear across all major B2 coursebooks, making this edition universally useful.

  • Immediate feedback cycles: Learners see correct answers instantly, reinforcing form‑meaning connections.

How the Game Works

Students play in small groups of 2–7 players. Each learner receives:

  • Mini‑whiteboard set

  • Ladder from 0 to 1,000,000 (included)

  • Player token

  • The Confusing Words Mixed Edition card pack and answer key

Learners read each gapped sentence, choose the best option, and write the letter on their mini‑whiteboard. When everyone is ready, the teacher reveals the correct answer. Correct answers move the player up the ladder; incorrect answers follow the teacher’s chosen rule (stay put or move back one rung). The first player to reach one million points wins.

What Learners Gain

  • Lexical discrimination: Students learn to distinguish between similar words with confidence.

  • Contextual interpretation: Learners practise reading short contexts quickly and accurately.

  • Collocational awareness: Many confusing words differ in collocation; repeated exposure builds intuitive recognition.

  • Automaticity under pressure: Rapid decision‑making reduces cognitive load during the real exam.

  • Greater exam confidence: Students internalise distinctions that frequently cause errors in Reading Part 1.

Included in the Pack

  • Full set of game cards (30 game cards)
